The California State Board of Education re-approved Extreme Learning as a Supplemental Services Provider under the No Child Left Behind (NCLB) Act through 2012.     Our online program, @Avanza (http://www.aavanza.com), is working to close the achievement gap while bridging the digital divide by partnering with schools throughout California. We tutor 2-12 grade students, using a combination of technology and personalized instruction from caring, knowledgeable adult tutors. We’ve already worked with thousands of students in more than 60 school districts, and the list is growing!

    The Position

    Under the direction of the Area Manager, the Academic Coach is responsible for creating and maintaining a positive and engaging learning environment during two hour sessions after-school with elementary, middle or high school students. The Academic Coach must communicate professionally with the Area Manager, students, parents, and school staff members. The Academic Coach provides weekly reports on individual students’ attendance, behavior, and academic progress as well as actively participates in weekly training sessions with the Area Manager.

    Examples of Duties

    During program:

    *Actively coach students through completing daily homework assignments
    *Actively monitor students’ progress through assigned computer-based curriculum
    *Mentor students to develop organizational skills
    *Apply principles of direct instruction to assist students in preparing for standardized tests, using Extreme Learning prepared lessons and materials
    *Lead students through technology-focused enrichment lessons
    *Electronically record attendance
    *Enforce program rules and structure, direct address behavior issues as they arise

    Before and/or after program:

    *Prepare the computers for use, checking functionality and signal strength
    *Prepare binders, workbooks and classroom materials for use
    *Ensure classroom is left clean and all materials and snacks are put away
    *Supervise arrival and dismissal of pre-assigned group
    *Participate in weekly work session with other coaches and Area Manager
    *Complete weekly reports to parents and teachers
    *Prepare and distribute initial, mid and final Individual Learning Plans (ILP’s)
    *Communicate informally with teachers regarding student progress
    *Communicate with Area Manager via e-mail daily after program
    *Participate in ongoing trainings

    Qualifications

    Knowledge of:

    *1-1 and small group tutoring techniques
    *Successful techniques for classroom management
    *English/Language Arts and Math concepts ranging from Kindergarten to 12th grade content

    Abilities:

    *Utilize technology and a variety of software programs (Windows operating system, Outlook, Excel, educational software)
    *Oral and written communication skills
    *Work independently with minimal direction
    *Exercise confidentiality and professionalism
    *Establish and maintain cooperative working relationships with others
    *Explain and teach English/LA and Math concepts ranging from Kindergarten to 12th grade content

    Other:

    *Must have a minimum of 48 college units
    *Ability to pass a background check and TB test is required
    *Spanish speaking highly desired
    *Must have open availability Mon through Thurs between 2-5 pm

    Compensation

    Academic coaches are paid a daily stipend which ranges from $36.00 – $45.00 for a two hour student program block and an hour of preparation/clean up time. Compensation varies depending on the coach’s level of education and assigned work location. Academic coaches also receive paid training.
